Our Business
The use of stone to cover metal has been around for more than 65 years. During World War II, the shinny metal roofs of military Quonset Huts used to store ammunition made easy targets for German bombers flying over England. Two soldiers from Australia came up with the idea of coating the roofs with tar and throwing dirt and rocks on the sticky surface to camouflage the buildings. When these soldiers returned to Australia after the war they used their idea to launch a new industry... (Stone Coated Metal Roofing).
Since then, Stone Coated Metal Roofing Industry has enjoyed many years of continued success in many countries worldwide. This success has been predominantly in the roofing industry due in part to smaller panel sizes and the limited nature of the old technology.
Until now, the standard method of stone-coating metal panels was to apply an adhesive to the substrate, embed stone granules into the adhesive, apply a clear over glaze over the stone and bake or cure the finished product in traditional kiln style ovens for several hours or for as long as a day. These outdated adhesive with limited properties in this "wet on wet" process traps moisture in the adhesive, not allowing the coating to properly and fully cure. This process allows for conditions of " poor adhesion and stone loss " over time. Additionally, it adds " considerable higher cost in time, labor, and energy expense" during production.

Poor Adhesion and Stone Loss
During the late 1980's and early 1990s, the company’s founder Ronald Knighton set out to improve the outdated methods used in stone coating metal roofing panels. After many years of stringent testing, research, and development, a unique process was created on which a United States Design & Utility Patent was issued February 18, 2003.
This unique "Patented Process" is accomplished through an innovative "Double-Cure System" in combination with Specially Formulated adhesive and glaze materials. In short, the product is cured from the inside out with either pure IR (infrared) heating or with a combination of convection and IR ovens. The process allows the product to be completely cured without trapping any moisture, in a fraction of the time required by the standard method. This allows for not only a better-finished product, but equally important, a far greater capacity in volume which also allows for a more affordable product.
By utilizing this patented quick cure process, we not only excel in the roofing manufacturing field, but we are now able to competitively expand this unique process into the long length roof and wall panel industry; along with various other industries, opening the door to the many building manufacturing and component companies to expand their business into the textured stone coated arena.
About Us Personal Biography
Ronald SW Knighton
President / CEO
Since 1978, Mr. Knighton has been committed to the Light-Gauge Construction Industry. Most specifically, the Roofing Industry Segment. As a B-1 licensed General Contractor in the State of California until the mid 1980’s, and fascinated with metal systems, he became involved in pioneering various products from overseas for use in the United States.
In early 1982, noticing the various problems with many of the then current metal roofing systems, he decided to design, engineer and patent his own manufacturing and coatings technology improvements, and provide the marketplace with better solutions.
Over the next 29 years Mr. Knighton has successfully introduced and established various metal roofing systems / companies in the U.S. He was instrumental in the initial negotiations to create Cal-Pac Roofing Systems for the introduction of Decra Stone-Steel Roofing Products and continued for two years under contract with Alex Harvey Industries of New Zealand to oversee a smooth transition. After completing his contract with Alex Harvey, he then signed under contract as National Marketing Director for Alcan Building Products, USA. For six years charged with the marketing and introduction of Gerard Stone-Steel Roofing Systems and the first U.S. manufacturing facility to produce stone-coated steel roofing. Mr. Knighton and his staff were also key principals in the creation and subsequent success of Gerard's market placement, distribution and contractor networks nationwide. Not to mention... the initial design, engineering and market introduction of Gerard's Stone-Coated Shake profile product line.
Speaking at a Gala Event for the Product Introduction of a client's new stone-coated roof product.
It was in late 1991 when Mr. Knighton left his position with Alcan Building Products / Gerard Roofing Technologies, that he founded; with long-time associate Dennis McGowan, The Phoenix Group, a roofing industry consultant firm that assisted in the expansion and growth of various clients. Many of which included industry giant ABC Supply Company, Inc., the largest roofing distributor in the United States. Phoenix and Mr. Knighton were highly praised for their strategic insight and market savvy by ABC Supply and it's founder Ken Hendricks. Currently, ABC Supply now boast annual sales in excess of 4 billion dollars; and with the recent acquisition of Bradco Supply, has 479 locations in 44 states nationwide.
Phoenix further established a strong sales and marketing team to introduce another industry mainstay, Dura-Loc Roofing Systems Ltd. of Canada, into the United States marketplace. The success that endured Dura-Loc Roofing Systems Ltd., and Gerard Roofing Technologies over the years was the key attraction which inspired Metals USA, one of the nations largest metal building products companies, to acquire both these companies. Today, Metals USA still enjoys the continued market success that Mr. Knighton and his team were paramount in creating years earlier.
Mr. Knighton has developed new products and created new markets for a select group of medium sized to Fortune 400 companies providing for millions of dollars in annual revenue. He holds graduate certificates in Industrial Distribution and Marketing Management form California State University Fullerton, and also currently has active United States Patents for a reversible roofing product and a manufacturing production processes.
Though he is still often active as an industry consultant, in January 2006, Mr. Knighton established his company as Phoenix Alliance Group, Inc. which he personally directs and manages his patented and intellectual technologies in a variety of industry fields with licensees throughout the world.
In addition to his many diverse business interests, for many years Mr. Knighton has also continued to devote his personal creative and leadership skills to advance several charitable organizations in the Southern California.
